Moacyr Scliar’s novel The Centaur in the Garden was included on the National Yiddish Book Center’s list of the "100 Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature."  Yann Martell’s Life of Pi was famously inspired by Scliar’s novel Max and the Cats. His other works include The Carnival of the Animals, The Ballad of the False MessiahThe Strange Nation of Rafael Mendes and The Collected Stories of Moacyr Scliar. He is a life-time member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

We discovered the wonderful world of Brazilian writer Moacyr Scliar. Physician and lifelong resident of Porto Alegre, Scliar tackled contemporary Brazilian society and Jewish tradition in equal measures. He reconciled in his colourful stories the multifarious influences that constitute a Latin American Jewish identity.
