What are the challenges and opportunities for libraries in the 21st century? Can they offer anything more than cafés with free Wi-Fi?  Director of the British Library, Roly Keating, and Head of Collections at the National Library of Israel, Aviad Stollman, discuss vital issues including open access, provenance of collections, acquisition challenges, digital preservation, public engagement and the importance of libraries as civic hubs.

Roly Keating

Roly Keating took up the post of Chief Executive of the British Library in September 2012. Since then he has overseen a series of significant developments, including a historic move to large-scale digital collecting with the implementation of the Non-Print Legal Deposit regulations, the incorporation into the Library of the Public Lending Right service, the closure of the Colindale site and the opening of The Newsroom, a new Reading Room at St Pancras dedicated to news collections across all media formats.

Roly Keating joined the Library after a long and successful career at the BBC, where his roles included Controller of BBC Two, Controller of BBC Four and Director of Archive Content, with editorial oversight of the BBC's online services including BBC iPlayer. He is a member of the Barbican Centre Board and a Trustee of Turner Contemporary in Margate. He is currently serving as a panel member for the Public Libraries Report, led by William Sieghart.

 

Aviad Stollman

Aviad Stollman is the Head of Collections and formerly the Judaica Curator at the National Library of Israel. Stollman holds a PhD in Talmud from Bar-Ilan University in Israel and carried out postdoctoral research at the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies, University of Texas, Austin, where he was a Visiting Scholar and Lecturer. Stollman's publications are in the areas of Talmud, and the Philosophy and History of Halakhah. He has a particular interest in the works of Maimonides.

Adam Taub

Adam Taub presents, hosts, and coaches speakers. A qualified intellectual property lawyer, he lectures at the Institute of Directors on business presentation Skills, and delivers in-house courses for companies. He has been a teacher at the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School and is an active communal leader and educator. He was a member of the Cambridge Footlights, writing and performing comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe.
