John McCarthy: You Can't Hide the Sun

John McCarthy

As a news journalist in the late 1980s John McCarthy’s career was abruptly cut short when, aged 29, he was captured by militiamen in Lebanon who held him captive for five and a half years.

The mystique of the Middle East and its myriad complexities have drawn him back and in his latest book, You Can’t Hide the Sun, McCarthy weaves moving testimony from Israeli Palestinians with his own experience.

Since his release McCarthy continued to work in radio and TV and has written four books including Some Other Rainbow and Island Race (with Sandi Toksvig). He co-presents a weekly BBC Radio 4 show, Excess Baggage.
