Mourning a Lost Father: Avraham Balaban
Chair: Risa Domb
Avraham Balaban's memoir of his childhood on Kibbutz Huldahweaves together two interrelated stories: a sensitive artist growing up in the pragmatic world of the kibbutz, and the rise and fall of a grand, but ultimately failed social experiment.
In this session, Balaban reflected on the mechanism of memory and the forces that shape it. He told of how returning to the kibbutz of his childhood to attend his father's funeral, he was forced to confront his buried, yet still painful childhood memories.
Avraham Balaban is Professor of Modern Hebrew Literature at theUniversity of Florida. He is a prize-winning poet and the author of seven studies of Israeli authors.
