My Mother was a Bag Lady: Josiane Behmoiras

Josiane Behmoiras
Matthew Reis

Dora B and her eight year old daughter were expelled for vagrancy from France to Israel. Convinced that she was the victim of a conspiracy, Dora gradually lost her grasp on the world. Josiane told us of the struggle to come to terms with her mother’s illness and gives us a portrait of an unusual woman. Her story is full of warmth, humour and heartbreak.

Dora B is Josiane Behmoiras’ first book. She now lives in Australia.

Matthew Reisz is the editor of the Jewish Quarterly.
