Our panel discussed the threats to democracy. In Freedom for Sale John Kampfner explores the widespread surrender of freedom for stability and wealth. Eric Kaufmann in Shall the Religious Inherit the Earth? examines the implications of the rise of religious conservatism and fanaticism; and Dominique Moïsi, in the Geopolitics of Emotion, shows how the world is now divided along different emotional fault-lines, fear being the dominant feeling in the West.

John Kampfner

John Kampfner is a journalist, broadcaster, commentator and a previous editor of The New Statesman and Moscow correspondent for the FT. His books include Freedom for Sale,which was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize, and Blair’s Wars.

Eric Kaufmann

Eric Kaufmann is Reader in Politics, Birkbeck College. He is the author of Shall the Religious Inherit the Earth: Religion, Demography and Politics in the 21st Century, and three other books. A regular contributor to Prospect magazine, he has also written for Newsweek International, Foreign Policy andJewish Chronicle.

Dominique Moïsi

Dominique Moïsi, a founder of the French Institute for International Relations, is currently professor at the College of Europe in Natolin, Warsaw. He regularly writes for The Financial Times and Foreign Affairs and is the author of Geopolitics of Emotions, How Cultures of Fear, Humiliation, and Hope are Reshaping the World.

Martin Bright

Martin Bright is former political editor of the JC and a former political editor of the New Statesman. He is founder of the youth employment charity The Creative Society.
