Philip Roth’s short story The Conversion of the Jews, which appears in Goodbye Columbus (1959), tells the story of a little boy who finds his Hebrew classes so hypocritical and oppressive that he is driven to stage a rebellion against his teacher, the aptly named Rabbi Binder.
