You Call That Suffering? A Short Story Workshop

This practical creative writing workshop looked at ways of turning your own experiences and memories into moving and amusing Yiddish short stories. Through writing exercises and a close reading of works by writers such as YL Peretz and Sholem Aleichem we explored the humour, courage and imagination that go into transforming crisis into comedy, and discovered the inspiration in frustration.

Workshop: Story by Bedtime

This practical afternoon workshop got our JBW audience writing a bedtime story to read to their loved ones. They had the chance to explore some of the elements of a good bedtime story: drama, tension, adventure, goodies, baddies, and a happy end, and learnt how to tell a story that will put someone to sleep… without boring them!

Writing Workshop: Can You Keep a Secret? Writing the Unspoken in Fiction and Memoir

A practical creative writing workshop on the importance of the hidden and unspoken in fiction and memoir. Secrets and secret places create mystery and tension, as well as good ingredients for story and character development. Explore, through writing and sharing stories, the secret meeting places and hidden gems of this city. Participants created fiction out of their own indiscretions, and invented characters with disturbing addictions, secret crushes, and unbearable tsures.
